ICEYE and Nokia to Build Sovereign Satellite Communications

What happened

ICEYE and Nokia announced Oct. 1 a partnership to build sovereign low-Earth-orbit satellite-communications systems that governments will fully own, control and operate themselves. The systems combine ICEYE's satellite manufacturing with Nokia's secure networking technology, targeting defense, border-security and emergency-response customers. First satellites are due to launch in 2028. ICEYE CEO Rafal Modrzewski framed the pitch explicitly against dependence on a foreign commercial operator's terms of service.

Read-across for SES

ICEYE was already a watchlist EO-adjacency entity. This extends it into sovereign satellite communications, the same government-owned-infrastructure pitch SES makes for IRIS² and meoSphere. A European, Nokia-backed rival with its own manufacturing base adds competitive pressure to SES's sovereign-connectivity sales pitch in defense and border-security markets. The 2028 horizon overlaps SES's own next-generation rollout.

As the brief filed it

[AGE: 8h] ICEYE and Nokia will jointly build sovereign LEO satellite-communications systems that governments will own and control outright. It's a direct pitch against SES's own sovereign-infrastructure model.
